My amp gets REALLY hot...is that bad?

My amp gets scortching hot really quick. One time I actually severly burned myself touching it. After playing it for about 1.5-2 hours straight, it'll usually just stop working (protect mode?) and start working again about a half hour later. Is this normal? Granted, i'm running at 2-ohms and it's summer in southern cali...but still. I can fry an egg on the dam thing. Thanks!
