I am looking for a GPS for my car, for a good price, is any type superior? How are they updated for new roads?

I noticed they say they are loaded with maps, but what about new construction? New roads are going in all over the place around here. I am not looking to spend more than $300, and don't need anything fancy, just a basic unit that will be dependable.
