The scene in American psycho (rich vs poor theme)?

The scene is where Mr Bateman is walking in the alleyway and he feels sorry for the homeless person. He bends down and goes on about how he can help him. Then Mr Batement realises the stink of the homeless person and feels no empathy for him rather he becomes rather disdainful of the homeless person and his inability to help himself and eventually stabs him. Do you think this the mindset of the wealthy in society? This doesn't apply for everyone but the other day my Economics lecturer was complaining about homeless people arguing with him and he was trying to tell us that you are where you are because of how hard you worked. The scene of american psycho immediately rang in my hand. What is everyone thoughts about greed and superficiality.
