Is it legal for a hotel to ask for a photocopy of the front and back of my credit card?

I booked a block of guest rooms at a hotel. In order to secure the the reservations, Ihad to fill our a credit card authorization form and provide a copy of the front and back of the card that I am using? Is this legal?
